SURFACE COATINGS

Burmetal carries out both surface treatments on its own production lines. Two separate processes, two different purposes.

GALVANIZING

Corrosion Protection and Longer Service Life

Metallurgically Bonded Coating

After cleaning and flux application, the wire is passed through a zinc bath and wiped to reach the target coating weight. Rather than being a layer sitting on the surface, the zinc is metallurgically bonded to the steel.

Corrosion Protection and Longer Service Life

Zinc protects in two ways: it isolates the steel from moisture and oxygen, and, being anodic relative to steel, it provides sacrificial protection. This way, cut ends and scratches formed during use do not become starting points for rust. Service life is directly proportional to coating weight — light coatings suit indoor and short-cycle use, while heavy coatings suit outdoor stockpiling and long sea freight.

Applicable Up to 1800 MPa

It can be applied to high-carbon drawn wires used for construction, agriculture, fencing systems and wire mesh, recycling and industrial packaging.

PHOSPHATING

A High-Performance Surface — Worked Into the Steel

Formed Within the Surface

Phosphating is not a coating-addition process but a conversion coating. The steel reacts in the bath to form a dense, crystalline zinc phosphate layer tightly bonded to the surface. For this reason the layer does not flake or peel.

The Feature That Enables High Tensile Strength

The crystalline structure holds the lubricant used during drawing on the surface even at high deformation rates. Without this feature, the deformation required to reach high-tensile products would damage the surface and cause seizing in the drawing dies. Phosphating is the essential step that makes the production of our highest-strength wires possible.

A Low-Friction, Wear-Resistant Surface

It moves smoothly and predictably through baler channels, guides and forming equipment, causing less wear on the customer’s equipment.

Clean Handling and Light Corrosion Protection

Thanks to its dry, dark and non-marking surface, it stays clean during manual handling and protects the wire throughout storage and transport. Where long-term outdoor exposure is expected, the right choice is galvanizing.

A Correctly Produced Economical Option

The Lowest Cost Per Ton

As there is no coating stage, the price reflects only the steel and drawing costs. It is the most efficient purchasing method for high-volume operations that consume wire quickly.

A Controlled Surface, Not a Raw Product

Bright wire is descaled under the same process control applied to coated products and drawn to a smooth, scale-free surface. Being uncoated does not mean it is unprocessed. Dimensional tolerances, tensile-strength properties and surface quality are maintained to the same standards.

Suitable for a Wide Range of Applications

It suits indoor baling, fast-cycle recycling lines, short storage times, general tying applications and industrial uses — that is, any application where the wire is consumed before corrosion becomes an issue. It is also the standard choice for customers who coat, weld or form the wire at their own facilities.

Every Product, With Both Coating Options

Galvanizing and phosphating can be applied across the entire product range — including round and oval Quiclink products, single-loop and double-loop bale ties, and bulk drawn wires.

Made to Order

Diameter, coating type, coating weight, cut length and coil weight are set according to the customer’s requirements; combinations not held in our standard stock can also be produced.

Process Control

Coating weight, adhesion performance, surface uniformity and tensile-strength properties are verified on samples taken throughout production, and each batch is traceable down to the wire rod source used.

Capacity and Flexibility

Both processes are carried out at our own facilities, on our own production lines; no subcontracting is used. Thanks to multiple drawing and coating lines running in parallel, both large-volume continuous contracts and short production runs with special specifications can be met.
